Bears (lat. Ursus) – a genus of mammals of the order of predatory.
According to paleontological information, the genus of bears appeared 5-6 million years ago. Its first representative is currently considered to be a bear, Ursus minimus, a relatively small animal whose fossils are found in France. All modern four species of the genus, as well as a number of extinct species (such as, for example, the cave bear Ursus spelaeus), are descended from the Etruscan bear, which lived 2-1 million years ago.
The youngest species of the genus is the polar bear, which separated from the brown bear about 200,000 years ago.
There are 4 modern species in the genus and several dozens of subspecies, which previously were given by some authors to species status (up to 78 species):
– Brown bear
– Baribal
– Polar bear
– White bear
– Spectacled bear
– Short-faced bear
– Etruscan bear
– Cave bear
– Small cave bear
