Sharks are a cartilage superorder (Chondrichthyes), belonging to the subclass of plate-lace (Elasmobranchii) and having the following distinguishing features: an elongated body of more or less torpedo shape, a large heterocercal tail fin, usually a large number of sharp teeth on each jaw.

The teeth of most sharks have the shape of sharp cones and sit on the cartilages of the upper and lower jaws. The teeth are regularly replaced as they fall on the principle of the conveyor - their replacement is constantly growing from the inside. According to its structure and origin, these are modified placoid scales. Depending on the diet and lifestyle, the teeth and jaws are very different in different types of sharks. Bottom sharks, whose food is usually protected by a hard shell, have crushing teeth - flat with a ribbed surface (raznozubaya shark). Many predatory species have long, sharp teeth adapted for easy penetration into prey flesh (for example, sand sharks). Such sharks as tiger, teeth wide and serrated - intended for cutting and tearing the meat of a larger victim. The plankton-eating sharks have small teeth (about 3-5 mm in the whale shark).
