The natural range of koalas includes coastal areas in the east and south of Australia, in the territory from Adelaide in the north to the southern part of the Cape York Peninsula. They are also common in regions with enough moisture to support suitable koalas forests. The koalas of the state of South Australia were largely destroyed during the first half of the 20th century, but with the help of individuals from Victoria, the population of koalas in South Australia was restored. At the beginning of the 20th century, they were brought to Yanchep in Western Australia, as well as to a number of islands off the coast of Queensland, including Kangaroo Island and Magnetic Island, which is believed to be the northernmost tip of the modern koala range. The total area of the koala range is about 1,000,000 km² and includes at least 30 biogeographic regions.
Study history
Koals went unnoticed by the expedition of James Cook, who in 1770 discovered the east coast of Australia. The first mention of them is found in the report of John Price, a servant of the governor of New South Wales, John Hunter, on a journey to the Blue Mountains in 1798. Price wrote that there is an animal in the Blue Mountains, called the klavlavine, which looks like a sloth. For science, the koala was discovered in 1802 by the naval officer Barralie, who discovered the remains of a koala from the Aboriginal people and sent the beast that had been alcoholized limbs to Philip King, the governor of New South Wales. In June 1803, a live koala was caught south of Sydney, and on August 21, the Sydney Gazette published a detailed description of it. In 1808, koalas were identified as a species similar to wombats.
For about half a century, koalas were found only within the boundaries of New South Wales. In 1855, the naturalist William Blandowski met him in Victoria, and in 1923, O. Thomas - in the south-eastern part of Queensland.
