A pavilion is a genre of building often found at large international exhibitions such as a world’s fair. It may be designed by a well known architect or designer from the exhibiting country to showcase the latest technology of the exhibitor. It is generally designed in the national architectural style of the exhibiting country.
The Expo pavilion is a 6,311-seat multi-purpose arena. It was built in 1932, the architect was Leland I Shumway. The building is in the PWA Art Deco style, built of blond brick with terra cotta ornamentation, and is considered one of the prime examples of Art Deco architecture in Tulsa.
It was home to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane men’s basketball team from 1947 until the opening of the Tulsa Convention Centre in 1976.
The concept of the Urbanian Pavilion was contributed by the Dutch designer Herman Kossmann and focused on residents of modern cities. According to Kossmann, its guiding principle was the awareness that city planners have to address the urgent needs of the residents as “The prerequisite for the city’s sustainable development.”
The pavilion is located in an old renovated manufacturing plant. It is the first building to receive a Mohurd three-star green building certification.
