Separate buildings turn into ruins, either through carelessness (lack of regular maintenance and repair), or due to intentional destruction. Localities become ruins due to population outflows, fighting, or natural disasters. In the absence of proper conservation, the ruins over time are steadily destroyed by weather factors and spontaneous disassembly into building materials.
There are cases when cities destroyed in ancient times by the elements, preserved for archaeologists a picture of the daily life of that time. Classical examples of this kind are Pompeii and Herculaneum, who died during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79.
In the Newest time, cities that have undergone extensive destruction are usually rebuilt. The harbinger of this approach was the restoration of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755.
