Greek temples were structures built to house deity statues within Greek sanctuaries in Greek paganism. The temples themselves did usually not directly serve a cult purpose, since the sacrifices and rituals dedicated to the respective deity took place outside them. Temples were frequently used to store votive offerings. They are the most important and most widespread building type in Greek architecture. In the Hellenistic kingdoms of Southwest Asia and of North Africa, buildings erected to fulfill the functions of a temple often continued to follow the local traditions. Even where a Greek influence is visible, such structures are not normally considered as Greek temples. This applies, for example, to the Graeco-Parthian and Bactrian temples, or to the Ptolemaic examples, which follow Egyptian tradition. Most Greek temples were oriented astronomically.

Most ancient Greek temples are rectangular in shape, they are approximately twice as wide as some with some exceptions, such as the huge temple of the Olympic Zevs in Athens, the length of which is almost 2.5 times the width. Many preserved temples have a circular shape and are called tolos.

The smallest temples are less than 25 meters long and the length of the circular toloses is as large as the diameter. The length of the vast majority of temples is between 30 and 60 meters, and small groups of Doric temples, including Parthenon, are between 60 and 80 meters, the largest, mainly Ionian and Corinthian, between 90 and 120 meters.

The temple rises from the stair base or stylobate, which raises the structure above the ground on which it stands. Early examples, such as the Zeus Temple in Olympia, have two steps, but most, such as Parthenon, three, except the Apollo temple in Didimi, which has six. In the core of the building, there is a built-in naosis, in which there is a whole, space in which the statue of the god stood. The whole has usually a veranda or finder, and sometimes another room or antenna, which was a treasury or storage space for trophies and gifts. The rooms were illuminated through a single large door with built-in wrought iron hardware and some rooms also through the roof windows.

On the stylobate, which is often completely enclosed with a naos, there are types of columns. To determine the type of temple, the number of columns at the entrance is important and their distribution.
