Willis Tower 3D model (born Willis Tower; until 2009 - Sears Tower) - a skyscraper in Chicago, USA, having a height of 442.1 meters and has 108 floors. The skyscraper was built from August 1970 to May 4, 1973. The main architect is Bruce Graham, the project engineer is Fazlur Khan.

After completion in 1974, it was the tallest building in the world, surpassing the height of the World Trade Center tower in New York. Skyscraper held this record for almost 25 years. Now the Willis Tower is the second tallest building in the United States (after the Freedom Tower) and the twentieth tallest building in the world.

The building has a stepped geometry. It consists of nine square tubes that form a large square at the base of the building. It stands on concrete piles with a stone pile, driven into a solid rock under it. Nine welded steel pipes go up to 50 floors. Then the building starts to taper off. Another seven pipes go up to the 66th floor, and five pipes go up to the 90th floor, and only two pipes form the remaining 20 floors. Thanks to this design, the frame of the building has a very large stiffness. On the roof there are two television antennas with a height of more than 80 meters.

The building area is more than 418 thousand square meters. There are 104 high-speed elevators in a skyscraper, which divide the building into three zones and help people navigate it. The fireproof frame is covered with black aluminum cladding with more than 16 thousand dark glass windows. Six automatic window cleaning machines clean the entire building eight times a year.

The twin towers Petronas in Kuala Lumpur with a height of 452 m, including decorative spiers, after their construction was completed in 1998, were declared the tallest buildings in the world. Not everyone agreed with this: there were two categories for defining the tallest buildings. Twin towers "Petronas" were considered the highest in one of the categories. After the construction of the Taipei 101 building was completed, the Petronas building lost ground in height with the spire, and the Willis Tower lost the lead in roof height. Nevertheless, the height of the Willis Tower antenna currently exceeds the height of the Taipei 101 spire.

On July 16, 2009, the Sears Tower was renamed the Willis Tower, after the name of the new tenant.

The Sears Tower was the first building to use this innovative design. It was both structurally efficient and economic: at 1,450 feet, it provided more space and rose higher than the Empire State Building and cost much less per unit area.

The Sears Tower is an example of the revolutionary bundled-tube structural design. Tube buildings gain most of their structural support from a rigid network of beams and columns in their outer walls. The rigid outer walls act like the walls of a hollow tube.

The Sears Tower is actually a bundle of nine tubes, and is considered one of the most efficient structures designed to withstand wind. This is a great design for a skyscraper in Chicago, the “Windy City,” where the average wind speed is 16 miles per hour. As the building climbs upward, the tubes begin to drop off, reducing the wind forces on the building.

In 1974, the Sears Tower in Chicago assumed the coveted title of world’s tallest building, at 1,454 feet designed by architect Bruce Graham and engineer Fazlur Khan.

It held this title for 22 years until 1998, when the decorative spires atop the Petronas Towers in Malaysia surpassed the Sears Tower by 33 feet. Today, the Sears Tower still boasts the tallest occupiable floor and the tallest skyscraper roof in the world. The Tower is fronted by a separate tourist entrance, the Skydeck Pavilion added in 1985 by Skidmore Owings and Merrill.
