The word "shark" comes from the ancient hákall. The most ancient representatives existed about 420-450 million years ago. To date, there are more than 450 species of sharks: from deepwater Etmopterus perryi, only 17 centimeters in length, to the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) - the largest fish (its length reaches 20, sometimes more than meters).

The teeth of most sharks are shaped like sharp cones and sit on the cartilage of the upper and lower jaws. Teeth regularly change as fall or wear on the principle of the conveyor - their replacement constantly grows on the inside. By its structure and origin it is a modification of the platcoid scales. Depending on the diet and lifestyle, teeth and jaw vary widely in different types of sharks. Donald sharks, whose prey is usually sheltered, have flat teeth for its crushing. Sharks hunting for quick prey are very sharp teeth, adapted for easy cutting and sacrifice. Sharks feeding plankton have very small teeth: the size of the teeth of whale and giant sharks, the largest fish of the world, is several millimeters
