M4 (Carbine, 5.56mm: M4) is a family of firearms derived from the early versions of the M16, based on the original AR-15. This is a truncated and lightweight version of M16A2, which actually repeats it by 80%. The M4 has a semi-automatic fire and fire control mode of 3 cartridges, while the M4A1 is characterized by the presence of a fully automatic firing mode. Also, the M4 differs from the M16A2 telescopic example.

Colt Company developed carbines (shortened trunk variants) based on the AR-15 / M16 family of rifles from the late 1960s. Some of these carabiners, including the Colt CAR-15 Commando, XM-177E, were armed by some US Army units and were also exported (including to Israel).

The need to build machine gun for helicopter and combat vehicles, service technicians, clerks (and, in general, not to carry a full M16A2 rifle to all of them), and the long-standing idea of replacing the M9 pistols and outdated M3A1 machine guns as the only effective weapon of choice, prompted engineers from Colt for the development of weapons which, in compact size, would provide an impressive effect of the assault rifle at appropriate distances.

On the basis of the M4A1 carabiner, the United States Naval Ground Operations Center developed a special set of components called the SOPMOD M4 kit. This set has as a core a submachine gun M4A1 with a thread type RIS (Rail Interface System - interface system guides). On the Picatinny guides on the carabiner box, and on the guide to the RIS knuckles, the following items can be attached: sights - Optical 4X ACOG, Collimator ("red dot") ACOG, Opened removable diopter sight; laser target viewers of the visible and infrared range; night sights; lanterns; front handle; modified 40-mm grenade launcher M203 with a shorter trunk and an improved sight. In addition, the kit includes a quick-release muffler, which is put directly on the regular firearm of the carabiner. Also, the M4 is equipped with a regular M9 banner knife and upper receiver. The new carbine entered the arsenal of all forces of US special operations.

However, the US Special Operations Command (US SOCOM) soon drew attention to the M4 as a possible single piece of automaton for all US Special Operations Forces. And in 1994, the Colt M4 carbine was adopted on the armament of special purpose units and the US Marine Corps.

The M4 carbine is a family of firearms tracing its lineage back to earlier carbine versions of the M16, all based on the original AR-15 made byArma Lite. It is a shorter and lighter version of the M16A2 assault rifle, achieving 80% parts commonality with the M16A2. The M4 has selective fire options including semi-automatic and three-round burst (like the M16A2), while the M4A1 has a full auto option in place of the three-round burst.
