For a long time, the rulers were made of various materials and in various sizes. Rulers are usually made from plastic or wood, less often from metals. Plastics have also been used since their invention; they can be molded using length marking rather than writing. Metal is used for longer rulers for use in the workshop; sometimes a metal edge is embedded in a wooden table ruler to preserve it when used for straight cutting. The 30 cm ruler is useful in drawing. Shorter rulers are convenient for storage in small spaces. In some cases, longer rulers are needed, for example, 46 cm. Rigid wooden or plastic sticks with a length of 1 yard and measuring sticks with a length of 1 meter are also used as an unambiguous measure of length. Classically for large projects, long measuring rods were used, replaced by a tape measure, a wheel surveyor or laser rangefinders.
Bench rulers are used for three main purposes: for measurement, to help draw straight lines and as a straight guide for cutting and with a blade. Practical rulers around the edges have distance marks.
A flexible tool for measuring length, which is not necessarily straightforward to use, is fabric tape measure. Roulette length is calibrated in inches and centimeters. It is used for measurements around a solid body, for example, for measuring a person’s waist, as well as linear measurements, for example, the inside of a leg. When not in use, folds up, taking up little space.

The reduction rule provides for larger divisions than standard measures to ensure shrinkage of metal castings. Also referred to as compression rule.

In geometry and cartography, the ruler is used only for drawing straight lines, measuring the distance along the ruler is considered rude due to the presence of an error from the parallax introduced by the thickness of the ruler. For a more accurate measurement, a measuring compass is used, the solution of which is then applied to the ruler.
The transverse scale ruler (ЛПМ-1) is intended for drawing and determining distances on topographic maps and plans.
