Step-ladders are special, as a rule, portable ladders, folding out for a specific task.

An unfolded staircase forming an isosceles triangle: on its sides there are one or two stairs (one-sided or two-sided climbing), between them, for rigidity of the structure, a platform is laid out closer to the top for leg support. The height of the stepladder is calculated either by the last step, or by the platform. The reliability of such a ladder is determined by the angle of its opening: the wider the opening, the more stable it is and, therefore, the more reliable.
