Sd. Kfz 253 Leichter Gepanzerter Beobachtungskraftwagen is a German light semi-track reconnaissance vehicle used in assault artillery as a commander machine; it was also used as an artillery unit, as well as for the support of mechanized infantry and infantry units during the 1940s and 1942s. The vehicle belonged to the Sd. Kfz 250 family.

Basic information

Sd.Kfz 253 in the Balkans (1941)
The car looked like the Sd.Kfz 250, but the Sd.Kfz 253 variant was completely closed. Demag / Wegman companies produced 285 cars between 1940 and 1941

The Sd.Kfz.253 was based on the armored car chassis of the Sd.Kfz.250 (Demag D7p chassis), from which it differed mainly in the upper armor and special surveillance equipment. Fully armored car (the main purpose is a commander's assault machine), equipped with a FuG 15 transmitter and a FuG 16 transceiver, as well as a rod antenna. There was a round two-leafed viewing hatch in the roof, followed by a second rectangular hatch. After its cessation of production, assault units were supplied with Sd.Kfz 250 conveyors in the version Sd.Kfz 250/5.

He was armed with a machine gun MG 34 caliber 7.92 mm. The crew consisted of 4 people.

The chassis was manufactured by Demag in Wetter (Ruhr) and Büssing - NAG in Berlin, and the case by Wegmann in Kassel, where the machine was assembled. Later the assembly was moved to the town of Kapfenberg, to the Böhler plant in Austria. Plans were the first batch of hulls to be released in December 1939, but production was delayed and the first issue took place on March 1940. Production continued until June 1941, and then the hulls were abandoned in favor of a simpler modification of the Sd.Kfz 250 production conveyor.

Initially, the StuG III batteries (3 platoons with 2 guns) were to be supplied by 5 Sd.Kfz 253 transporters, but due to the lack of production time from July 7, 1940, they switched to 4 armored vehicles (one for commanders of 3 platoons and 1 for battery commander). As a result of the losses in the fighting and the decision to cease production, Sd.Kfz 253 was used until about 1943.
