The Sherman Firefly was a World War II British variant of the American Sherman tank, fitted with the powerful British 17 pounder anti-tank gun as its main weapon. Originally conceived as a stopgap until future British tank designs came into service, the Sherman Firefly became the most common vehicle with the 17 pounder in World War II.
After the problem of getting the gun to fit in the Sherman's turret was solved, the Firefly was put into production in early 1944, in time to equip Field Marshal Montomery‘s forces for the Normandy landings. It soon became highly valued as the only British tank capable of defeating the Panther and Tiger tanks it faced in Normandy at standard combat ranges. In recognition of this, German tank and anti-tank gun crews were instructed to attack Fireflies first. Between 2100 and 2200 were manufactured before production wound down in 1945.

Sherman Firefly series of tank used by the United Kingdom and its common wealth allied partners in th e 2nd World war. It is fitted with the powerful 3-inch (76.2 mm) calibre British 17-pounder anti-tank gun as its main weapon. During the Second World war, its basic 75 mm (2.95 in) gun was excellent to deal with other tanks against armor up to 75 mm (2.95 in), or against fortifications and infantry. This British-designed tank was finally capable to deal with the impressive German Tiger and Panther tanks at certain distance.

W.G.K. Kilbourn wa s a man who built the prototype of the tank which later transformed into the reality and finally served the British forces from June 1944 onwards. The nickname Firefly was adopted due to the bright muzzle flash of the main gun. During the war, Shermans with 17-pounder guns were usually known as 1C, 1C Hybrid, or VC, depending on the basic mark of the vehicle. The main armament of the Sherman Firefly was the Ordnance Quick-Firing 17-pounder; it was the most powerful British tank gun during the war. It can penetrate more armour than the 8.8 cm KwK 36 fitted to the German Tiger I or the Panther tank’s 7.5 cm KwK 42.
