A sword is a bladed combat weapon, used for slashing or thrusting. It is usually longer than a knife or a dagger. Swords developed in the Bronze Age, the earliest specimen date to about 1600 BC. The later Iron Age sword remained shorter and without a cross guard.
The use of sword is known as swordsmanship, or in modern context as fencing. In the Early Modern Age, western sword design diverged into roughly two forms, the thrusting swords and sabers.
The thrusting swords such as the rapier and eventually the small sword were designed to impale their targets completely and stab them severely resulting in deep wounds. Their long and straight yet light and well balanced design made them easily maneuverable and deadly in a duel. But they are ineffective when it comes to slashing and chopping.
The Sabre and similar blades such as the cutlass were built more heavily and were more typically used in warfare. They were built for slashing and chopping at multiple enemies.
The first weapons that can be classified as swords date back to around 3300 BC. The sword developed from the knife or dagger. A knife has only one cutting edge while a dagger has two cutting edges.
