An antique firearm is a term used to describe a firearm that was designed and manufactured prior to the beginning of the 20th century. Flintlock is a general term for any firearm that uses a flint striking ignition mechanism. The true flintlock continued to be in common use for over two centuries, replaced by percussion cap and, later, the cartridge-based systems in the early-to-mid 19th century.

Flintlock pistols were used as self-defense weapons and as military arms and came in a variety of sizes and styles which often overlap. Their effective range was short, and they were frequently used as an adjunct to a sword or cutlass. Flash powder-fired flintlock pistols like the Ketland brass barrel smooth bore pistol were common in colonial America. During the Revolutionary War, British soldiers carried the New Model 1760 flintlock pistol, a design that was quickly copied by American arms makers. The Model 1775 .62 caliber single-shot flintlock pistol is considered by some to be the first U.S. Army-issued handgun. Flintlock pistols enjoy continuing popularity with both collectors and black-powder shooting enthusiasts. Military flintlock muskets tended to weigh approximately ten pounds, as heavier weapons were found to be too cumbersome, and lighter weapons were not rugged or heavy enough to be used in hand-to-hand combat.
