Pallet, hoist or lift - flat construction made of wood or plastic (and in some cases metal) designed to move a variety of goods in a convenient way, because it can be lifted by any mobile lifting device. Products placed on a pallet can be fastened to it by belts (fastening tapes), shrinking tape or stretch films.
Most pallets can carry a load of 1 000 kg. The emergence of containers for rail, sea and road for almost all goods has facilitated the use of pallets, since containers are always a smooth, smooth surface and the use of pallets is economically advantageous.
An empty pallet weighs 15-21 kilograms. In Europe, a standard EUR pallet is used, which measures 800x1200x145 mm. It is used mainly for retail trade, its size is determined by the internal sizes of trucks that supply from warehouses to retail establishments. The cheapest pallets are made of soft wood and are often a non-returnable container to be recycled with other packaging materials. These pallets have a very simple construction that allows them to be lifted from only two opposite sides. Slightly more sophisticated pallets of high quality wood and most plastic and metal pallets can be removed from all four sides. These expensive pallets usually require a pledge and must be returned to the sender or resold after use. Many of these four-sided pallets are colored, encoded according to the loads they can carry, and may have other features.
Retail firms that use standard pallets for loading and unloading as well as internal circulation benefit more from the modular nature of pallets than firms that do not operate standardized pallets. The exception is those establishments that sell small quantities of expensive goods, such as jewelry stores or cars.
