Sustainable construction in coastal areas is a sensitive topic, especially in densely populated areas. Urban planning now reflects the need to protect our coasts and live in harmony with nature. Cities like Rio de Janeiro want to reconnect with their waterfront by revitalizing ports. Recent architecture also shows this affinity with water. Along coastlines and shorelines, building and landscaping designs increasingly derive from water or truly incorporate aquatic elements, such as announcing water and celebrating nature. These structures create a magnificent bridge between the land and the sea, the human and nature.
One is solid, the other liquid: the environment built and water flowing freely. The mixture of these two opposites seems improbable. Generally, the two meet in the form of a dam or construction project blocking natural access to water. What we see now appearing, however, is a superb dialogue between these two elements.
There are many historical examples in which water has shaped design. The aqueducts, although constructed for practical purposes, emerged elegantly from the landscape and testified to both the beauty of the design and the skill of the engineers. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Waterfall House to strengthen the waterfall rather than eradicate it.
Over the last decade, residential architecture along the shorelines has adopted water as a source of inspiration, and not just as a force of nature to rely on. However, designs shaped by water are no longer confined to residential buildings. The following examples show buildings and urban landscaping around the world
The last decade has seen the emergence of seafront architecture in urban centers actively seeking to recreate water links. This trend also reflects a heightened awareness of our need to support our natural environment rather than wanting to contain it by constructions.
In Copenhagen, Denmark, the impressive Den Blå Planet, the waterfront Blue Planet Aquarium, features a sinuous, swirling architecture inspired by the infinite flow of water. The swirl-like entrance immerses visitors in an aquatic world.
In northern China, the Harbin Opera House is harmoniously integrated into the wetlands, with fluid lines that seem to be sculpted by wind and water. In a city of more than 10 million inhabitants, this superb building symbolizes both urban modernity and proximity to an extreme environment.
