The name of balustrade is only used today to designate the guardrails along high terraces, to prevent falls. There are no exterior balustrades on the cornices of the buildings before the ogival period, for the reason that until that time the roofs did not pour their water into gutters, but let them drain directly on the ground. Without asserting that there were balustrades on the Romanesque monuments, knowing no example to quote, we will abstain. But it is advisable to divide the balustrades into internal balustrades, which are intended to decorate the front of the galleries, tribunes, and exterior balustrades, arranged on the gutters of the attic or at the end of the paved terraces of the buildings.
It was scarcely from 1220 to 1230 that an easy circulation was established outside the large buildings, on every floor, by means of gutters or galleries, and that it was felt, therefore, that need to avoid the danger which these couriers, often narrow, presented by covering them with balustrades; but before that time, in the interiors of churches or large halls, galleries and tribunes were established, the access of which was public, and which consequently had to be provided with guardrails. It is certain that these railings were often, during the Romanesque period, made of wood; when they were of stone, they were rather supporting walls than balustrades. The grandstand of the porch of the abbey church of Vézelay (porch whose construction can be between 1150 and 1160), is provided with a wall of support, this wall of support being decorated with large saw teeth which give it the appearance of a lighter crown than the rest of the construction. The inner galleries of the two gables of the transept of the same church, built during the last years of the twelfth century or at the beginning of the thirteenth, have beautiful solid balustrades or sideboards decorated with arcatures, on which are placed the columns of this triforium.
