Greek temples were structures built to house deity statues within Greek sanctuaries in Greek paganism. The temples themselves did usually not directly serve a cult purpose since the sacrifices and rituals dedicated to the respective deity took place outside them. Temples were frequently used to store votive offerings. They are the most important and most widespread building type in Greek architecture. In the Hellenistic kingdoms of Southwest Asia and of North Africa, buildings erected to fulfill the functions of a temple often continued to follow the local traditions. Even where a Greek influence is visible, such structures are not normally considered as Greek temples. This applies, for example, to the Graeco-Parthian and Bactrian temples, or to the Ptolemaic examples, which follow Egyptian tradition. Most Greek temples were oriented astronomically.

According to Vitruvius he structure of the Greek temple comes from the old buildings of clay and wooden beams, initially used as a room, whose plant seems to be characterized by a curved finish, replaced only at the end of the century VIII a. C. by rectangular plants.

One of the oldest precedent examples of temple structures is represented by a monumental tomb of Lefkandi, on the island of Euboea, which dates back to the early 10th century BC. C. It was a building of narrow and elongated plant (10 x 45 m), finished off at the end by an apse, with walls of clay and wood protected by a wide roof. The roof protruded above the walls, supported by a row of 67 free-standing wooden supports, which are the first example of a peristyle. The building, subdivided internally into three bays, was used for the rich burial of a royal couple and was perhaps a hero(This is the tomb-sanctuary of a chief, considered a divine protector). 4

A more recent example is the beach cottage of Eretria, a structure discovered under Apollo temple Dafnéforo, with a length of 35 m, still capped apse and sustained by a row of central support, which is from the end roof from the VIII century a. C. The last investigations have put in doubt the sacred function of the Daphneforium of Eretria, seeing in it the dwelling of a wanax (sovereign) local, inside which the ritual practices realized by the head of the community were developed.

A períptero temple dedicated to Artemis, with the prónaos of a semicircular plant with columns of wood, has recently been discovered near Patras (in Ano Mazaraki). 5

While in continental Greece the apse plant seems to have spread, in Crete they are in the seventh century BC. C. rectangular buildings with flat roofs: among the most outstanding examples is the temple A de Prinias (around 625 - 620 BC ), which lacks architectural orders and sculpted decorations, in which the presence of an internal fire recalls the Mycenaean structure of the megaron . 6 In Asia Minor they were erected from the VIII century a. C. the great temples of Samos andEretria .
