M4A2 Sherman - Destroyer 3D model. Originally modeled in cinema4D 9.5. Detailed enough for close-up renders. The zip-file contains bodypaint textures and standard materials.

Origin

The U.S. Army Artillery Department designed the M4 to replace the M3 Lee. Detailed design features the M4 sent the Ordnance Department itself the 31 of August of 1940, but the development of a prototype was delayed completion for the final design of the M3 Lee and could enter production.

The 18 of April of 1941, the final design for the new model features were approved at a conference in Aberdeen Proving Grounds, which was attended by representatives of the Mechanized Force and the Department of Artillery. The objective was to produce a reliable and fast-medium combat car, capable of defeating any other armor used by the Axis nations. The first experimental model of the M4 was finalized on 2 September 1941. The M4 entered production in February 1942.

Doctrine

As the United States approached entry into World War II, armored employment was governed by the Field Manual 100-5 (published on May 1941, the month following the selection of the final design of the M4 tank ). That field manual stated:

"The armored division is primarily organized to carry out missions that require great mobility and firepower. It is given decisive missions. It is capable of participating in all forms of combat, but its main function is in offensive operations against hostile rear areas."

The doctrine of the United States argued that the most critical anti-tank work (stopping enemy tank attacks) was mainly due to towed and self-propelled anti-tank guns, both called " tank destroyers ", with allied tanks, being used in support if possible. Speed was essential to carry tank destroyers from behind to destroy incoming tanks. This doctrine was rarely followed in combat, as it was found to be impractical. Commanders were reluctant to leave tank destroyers in reserve; if they were, it was also easier for a mechanized force against achieving a breakthrough against an American tank battalion, which would not have all its anti-tank weapons in the front during the start of any attack.

Production

In World War II, the U.S. Army finally deployed 16 armored divisions, along with 70 independent tank battalions, while the U.S. Marine Corps sent six Sherman tank battalions. A third of all army tank battalions and the six marine tank battalions were deployed in the Pacific War. Before September 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had announced a production program that required 120,000 tanks for the Allied war effort. Although the US industrial complex was not affected by enemy air raids or submarine warfare such as Japan, Germany and, to a lesser extent, Britain, a huge amount of steel for tank production was diverted to the construction of warships and other warships.
