The Citroen DS was a front-engine, front-wheel-drive executive car that was manufactured and marketed by the French company Citroen from 1955 to 1975 in sedan, estate and convertible body configurations across three generations.
It is known for its aerodynamic, futuristic body design and innovative technology, the DS set new standards in ride quality, handling, and braking. The DS always maintained its shape and size, with easily removable, unstressed body panels, but certain design changes did occur.
During the 20 year production life improvements were made on an ongoing basis. The 1955 DS19 was 65% costlier than the car it replaced, the Citroen Traction Avant. This affected the likely sales in a country still recovering from the economic crisis during the World War II, so a cheaper sub model was introduced in 1957.
The ID shared the DS’s body but was not as much powerful and opulent. Although it shared the engine capacity of the DS engine, the ID provided a maximum power output of only 69hp, compared to the 75hp claimed for the DS19.
