The ISU-122 was a heavy self propelled assault gun for Red Army in World War II which is mostly used as tank destroyer. ISU-122 utilized the Soviet Union’s surplus with 122 mm guns to create an effective and accurate heavy tank destroyer with over twice the rate of fire as the 152 variant. It is also featured with superior armor and protection when compared to previous Soviet self-propelled guns.

The ISU-122 was used as a powerful assault gun, a self-propelled howitzer, and a long-range tank destroyer, the same as with the SU-152 and ISU-152 heavy self-propelled guns in general. The primary application of the ISU-122 was as a tank destroyer, while the SU/ISU-152 tended more towards the assault gun role. In the 1950s, many ISU-122s were converted for civilian use. Many others were converted into ARVs, and some others into heavy rocket launching platforms. It comes in two variants – ISU-122S and ISU-122E.

The rate of fire was now 2-3 shots per minute, and even 4 shots per minute with experienced loaders for ISU-122S. BTT-1 and ISU – T were the armored recovery vehicles based on the ISU-122 that was effectively redundant after WWII.

The ISU-122 was a multi-role tank, much like the ISU-152. Its main version ISU-122E – was designed to be protected against German 88 mm (3.46 in) guns, but it was not accepted into service due to its significantly reduced mobility.
