The Kawasaki W800 is a retro style parallel twin motorcycle classic bike produced by Kawasaki from 2011 to 2016 that emulates the Kawasaki W series. It is offered with a perfect mix of old school style, gloss-painted and pinstriped fuel tank and modern technologies. Its classic café racer look is underlined by the classy fuel tank, the traditional frame design and the long seat with thick, ribbed padding. It comes with a special paint job which helps it stand out from the crowd. In terms of power, the Kawasaki W800 Special Edition boosts an air-cooled, 4-stroke vertical twin engine with a displacement of 773 cc that generates a maximum power of 48 PS at 6,500 rpm and 60 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm.
There is so much to like about the W800. Mixing high tech with heritage in one seductive retro package, the W800, with classic, class leading features, makes sound, simple sense in a complicated motorcycling world. The Kawasaki’s parallel twin is air-cooled and even has bevel-gear-driven cam to add to its retro authenticity, just like the original 1966 W-series bikes, and it feels and thumps along with proper charm if not a great deal of power.
Kawasaki was the first of the Japanese brands to go seriously retro with their W650 or more than a decade ago. The W800 has never been updated as such, however Kawasaki have released a few ‘Special Edition’ W800 models that feature black paint on their exhausts, engine and other chassis components. In 2011, thanks to a 5mm larger bore, Kawasaki has reinvented their machine and the W650 has grown to become the W800 and this time around Triumph should definitely sit up and take notice.
