The MD-82 is a mid-range passenger aircraft developed by the American firm McDonnell Douglas. McDonnell Douglas announced its intention to create a modification of the MD-80 aircraft in April 1979. Due to the fact that the first customer was Mexican airline AeroMexico (which should operate the aircraft in rather harsh conditions of mountains and high temperatures), the company intended to develop more powerful turbofan engines that would meet the conditions of such exploitation. The first aircraft, which received the designation MD-82, performed the first flight on January 8, 1981. It was certified at the end of July, and deliveries began in August.

Since November 1986, MD-82 aircraft have been built in the People's Republic of China under license from an aircraft factory in Shanghai. The agreement was signed in April 1985, according to which the construction of 25 aircraft from parts supplied from the United States was allowed. The first licensed aircraft was built in the spring of 1987 and made its first flight in early July. In April 1990, an agreement was reached on the construction of another 20 aircraft, in which case individual structural elements should be made in the PRC. Aircraft MD-82 is considered in China as one of the main candidates in the Tranklayner program, which envisages the development of a fleet of short-haul aircraft. Under this program, in 1994, it was decided to build 20 more new MD-82 aircraft, and also to build new McDonnell Douglas MD-90 aircraft in the future.

The aircraft is equipped with the usual avionics complex with electromechanical means of data indication. In recent years, at the request of the customer can be installed digital complex EFIS. Two turbofan engines Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217 (thrust 9080 kgf) or JT8D-217C (thrust 9455 kgf) were installed. This modification is produced from 1981. By the beginning of 1997, about 585 aircraft were built.
