McDonnell Douglas MD-11 3D model on Flatpyramid.

Work on the project of this aircraft began December 30, 1986, when the airline British Caledonian placed an order for three cars of this type. MD-11 was the result of two years of research on ways to improve the then-in-production DC-10 model. The plane made its first flight on January 10, 1990, it was certified in November of the same year, and the first commercial copy was transferred to Finnair Airlines on December 7, 1990.

The main differences of this aircraft from its predecessor DC-10 lay in the fuselage lengthened by 5.71 meters, the presence of tips (winglets) at the ends of the wing, the modified tail unit. In addition, the MD-11 was equipped with the most modern cockpit for two pilots with the latest EFIS control system, which displayed all flight information on six monitors, the passenger compartment was also redesigned, and new engines were installed. MD-11 was offered to customers in four versions:

MD-11ER - aircraft with an increased radius of flight,
MD-11F - cargo option
MD-11C is a “combi” variant when part of the passenger compartment was occupied by passenger seats, and part was assigned for cargo,
MD-11CF - could easily be converted into a passenger or cargo, depending on the requirements of a particular flight.
McDonnell Douglas offered several more exotic projects of this aircraft, for example, with an increased fuselage length to accommodate even more passengers or cargo, or even offered to install additional seats and special windows on the lower deck, and use this new cabin to view the panorama during the flight, but all these options did not find the proper response from buyers. In 1996, McDonnell Douglas proposed to begin work on the project of the aircraft MD-XX (MD-Ex), which was supposed to have a modified wing design. It was planned to create two versions of this aircraft: the first with the fuselage of the standard MD-11 and capable of flying at a distance of 15 thousand 565 kilometers, and the second, with an enlarged fuselage capable of carrying up to 375 passengers. But this project was never implemented.
