Historically, Art Nouveau was preceded by eclecticism, with which Art Nouveau combines a number of common points. Since in the West eclecticism was almost completely absorbed by romanticism, in northern modernity (national romanticism) the border with eclecticism is completely erased. For example, the Cathedral of St. Michael in Turku (1905) is considered both modern and neo-Gothic. Neo-Russian style is also being considered as a variant of Art Nouveau.

Since the starting point of modern architecture is the Eiffel Tower (1889), the French synonym “art nouveau” was assigned to this style, since it was radically different from romantic attempts to reproduce architectural examples of the past.

From France, through Louis Sullivan, Art Nouveau entered the United States, where the Chicago School of Architecture was formed. Metal structures made it possible to create the first skyscrapers (16-storey Monadnock Building, 1893), in which the brick turned into a decorative element. The name of organic architecture was assigned to American Art Nouveau, since buildings organically fit into the environment. This was reflected in the movie King Kong (1933), when a giant monkey took the skyscraper (103-story Empire State Building) for the rock.

Catholic Church of Am Steinhof. Architect Otto Wagner, Vienna, 1907.
In Europe, Art Nouveau architecture reaches its peak in the work of the Belgian Victor Hort, who made extensive use of metal and glass (Hotel-Tassel, 1894), paying considerable attention to interior decoration in the form of a metal floral ornament (lamps, railings, door handles) and mosaic floors . Horta Guimard, a student of Horta, distributed the Belgian version of Art Nouveau to France, creating the entrance pavilions of the Paris metro (1900).

The original center of Art Nouveau developed in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) thanks to the architectural work of Antonio Gaudi. Starting as an eclectic, Gaudi soon freed himself from attempts to stylize the architecture of past eras. In the decor, he makes extensive use of forged elements and tiles (Casa Batllo, 1906). During the construction of the Casa Mila residential building (1910), reinforced concrete becomes the main building material, the project provides for a ventilation system, an underground garage and elevators.

The German version of Art Nouveau is called "Art Nouveau." She was distinguished by great restraint, an abundance of glass and concrete (Monument to the Battle of the Peoples, 1913). Austrian Art Nouveau, called the Secession, was distinguished by its great grace. Its leader was the Viennese architect Otto Wagner. An example of Austrian Art Nouveau is the Church of Am Steinhof (1907).

The fate of modernity is debatable. According to one version, after the First World War, it flowed into functionalism (Le Corbusier), which completely abandoned decor and ornament, leaving only modern glass and reinforced concrete. According to another version, after the First World War, Art Nouveau was replaced by the Art Deco style, although there is a version that Art Deco is a late variety of Art Nouveau.
