Lotus Cars Limited is an English sports and racing car manufacturer based in Hetele, Norfolk, England.
The company was founded in 1952 by Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman as Lotus Engineering Ltd. Initially, the production was located in the building of the former stable in Hornsey. Since 1966, the production of cars has been moved to a modern factory near Hetel. Next to the factory was an old military airfield, which was converted into a test track.
In 1982, at the age of 54, Colin Chapman died of a heart attack. His successful racing cars won seven titles in Formula 1 racing.
In 1986, the company was bought by General Motors, which sold it to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A. August 27, 1993, for 30 million US dollars. In 1996, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd (Proton), which owns Malaysian car company Proton, bought out a controlling stake.
In October 2017, 51% of the shares of Lotus Cars were acquired by the Chinese concern Geely Automobile.
