A pickup truck is a light truck with a closed cab and an open cargo area with low sides and a rear door.

Originally produced as a working vehicle with a minimum of amenities, but in the 1950s, American consumers began to purchase pickups not for the purpose of transporting cargo but to emphasize their lifestyle. And by the 1990s, only less than 15 percent of owners reported using it only as a cargo vehicle.

Today in North America, pickup is mainly used as a passenger car and accounts for about 18 percent of the total number of cars sold in the United States.

The term “pickup” was used by Studebaker in 1913 and by the 1930s pickup became a standard term.

In Australia and New Zealand, the name Ute (short for “utilitarian”) is used for both pickups and coupes.

The first delivery pickups with a small platform for the transport of small shipments based on passenger cars with internal combustion engines appeared at the beginning of the 20th century in Europe and in the USA. In the second half of the 1910s, the largest US automakers, Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet, launched their mass conveyor assembly.
