Popeye’s first appearance was the 17 of January of 1929 as a minor character in Segar’s comic strip Thimble Theater, which was published since 1919 in the newspaper The New York Evening Journal. The strip was starring Oliva Olivo, his brother Castor Olivo and her boyfriend, Ham Gravy. twoPopeye was originally hired by Castor and Ham to pilot the ship that would help them hunt a magical hen. Weeks later, while traveling back, Popeye is shot, but the chicken gives him superhuman strength in response to his care. Although the character was going to have a temporary character in the story, his popularity was increasing over time and became the protagonist of the comic strip. In addition, Olivia left Ham to become Popeye’s new girlfriend.

In 1933, Popeye received a baby by correspondence, which he adopted and baptized Cocoliso (for the absence of hair). Other regular characters within the comic strip were Pilon, a gluttonous vividor and hamburger lover; George W. Geezil, a bearded shoemaker who didn’t get along with Pylon, and Eugene the Jeep, a yellow animal brought from Africa. There was also the Sea Witch (last witch on earth) and Alice the Goon, her henchman.

The comic strip had certain differences with the animated series. The stories were more complex, with several characters that did not appear in the cartoons (King Blozo, for example). The use of spinach was not very common and Bluto only had an appearance. Segar signed the first comic strips with a cigarette because his last name was a homophone of “cigar” (cigarette in English ).

Thimble Theater became one of King Features’ most popular comic strips during the 1930s and continued to be published for decades. After the death of Segar in 1938, the comic strip became the responsibility of several artists. In the 50s a derivative entitled Popeye the Sailor was created. Due to the character’s increasing popularity, Thimble Theater changed its name to Thimble Theater Starring Popeye in the 60s, and finally to Popeye in the 70s.
