Since the eighteenth century, the great diversity of the French sea fronts, from the Channel to the Mediterranean, has favored the emergence of a rich and varied seaside heritage. From 19th century winter and aristocratic resorts to summer vacations at the beach, the territory of choice for mass tourism in the 20th century, these stays are also a reflection of a society in the throes of change, which, thanks to the development of means of transport and the advent of paid holidays, to new leisure activities.
From the first sea baths practiced for curative purposes to contemporary recreational, sporting or playful habits, the exhibition illustrates this new relationship with the sea and the shore through the emblematic places. Great hotels, casinos, villas, marinas, villages and holiday clubs are set opposite evocations of the seashore through painting, films, newspapers, and posters, but also bathing suits.
The issue of preservation closes the exhibition, opening the questioning on the heritage of these natural and built complexes, as well as on the seaside town of tomorrow, in a time of globalization and global warming. Construction, post-World War II reconstruction, adaptation to galloping tourism, the rise of international tourism to the detriment of the French coast, enhancement of heritage. the architecture of the seaside has undergone a rapid and constant evolution, especially in the twentieth century. Dormitories, campgrounds, luxury accommodations, the constraint for architects is to adapt to many tourists, and varied wishes.
