At this time, many artists and theorists call for a return to the sources of architecture and the arts. Depreciating the technical innovations, these critics of the modernity of which William Morris (1834-1896) and John Ruskin (1819-1900) are the most faithful representatives, seek the return to the forms of the earth, and the craft industry. Bergson, less drastic in his reflections, is interested in a more nuanced approach of the industry. He sees in it a definite answer to social problems; however, he is aware that an overly industrialized society can bring its own problems. In order to simplify human existence, the great powers have developed technical know-how, a knowledge that would have gone a little too far, according to Bergson. The author argues that this tendency to want everything to simplify has caused the opposite effect. This position on the place of industry in society leads Bergson to think further and to take an interest in those who live in these new cities and the relation to the objects that surround them.

One of the only attempts to define space for the city comes from Paul Zucker (1888-1971) in his book Town and Square. German architect and art theorist Paul Zucker attempts to establish a complete definition of the city, focusing on the concept of space. According to him, the term "space" was often used, sometimes with good reason, but often wrongly. For Zucker, the representation of space goes through the notion of the square, not only the geometric form but the landscaped green space or simply a place of rest for the citizen. According to him, the "square" has a proper and important history, representing by itself the evolution of space through the centuries. Zucker analyzes the square as an architecture. When the square is built, laid out and thought off as architecture, one can easily find the same characteristics of definition of space through these two types of construction.
