A fan is a motorized appliance used to create flow within a fluid, typically a gas such as air. A fan consists of revolving blades which act on the air.
Mechanically a fan can be any revolving vane or vanes used for producing currents of air. Fans produce air flows with high volume and low pressure, as opposed to compressors which produce relatively low volume while running on high pressure.
Fans are often used to cool people; they do not, in fact, cool the air. Fans work by evaporative cooling of sweat and increased heat convection into the surrounding air due to the airflow from the fans. Thus, fans prove to be ineffective in cooling if the nearby air has high humidity. A fan blade is usually made of wood, plastic or metal.
The fan called Punkah was used in India about 500 BCE. It was handheld fan made from bamboo strips or other plant fibre, that could be rotated or tanned to move air.
With the arrival of convenient steam power, fans could finally be used for airing.
