In France, there is a strong attachment to the picturesque village. A model that is anchored on a heritage vision and attachment to rurality, which can be considered as the essential basis of our urban lives.
Small local shops, focusing on short circuits and local products, with an approach to the development of handicrafts, are becoming new in our city centers. They too have evolved to attract a new clientele and reach the new generations, motivated to change their mode of consumption. Maybe this impression of returning to the past is therefore relative?
The city center of yesteryear has evolved over time. The cities destroyed during the Second World War also knew how to modernize and adapt to the post-war period and become what they are today. Thinking the present by reinterpreting the past will surely have a future! This makes it possible to strive towards a model that works, to return to the sources and perhaps be one of the answers that can lead us towards an urbanity that combines identity, culture, diversity, proximity, and conviviality.
A question that arises for all cities that have suffered trauma and destruction, whether the latter are linked to natural disasters, fires or wars. In this regard, the Syrian architect Marwa al-Sabouni questions the role of architects after the war and the destruction of cities in his book In the ruins of Homs, Diary of a Syrian architect. It expresses the need to find local solutions, to draw on the cultural tradition to make reconstruction the opportunity to create an ideal city, designed for the inhabitants. Because rebuilt cities are above all the hope of a new beginning for all! And it is in this that their urbanities are so rich and so exciting.
