The higher the skyscraper, the more important the structure. Structures vary by country and differ mainly in their materials. The construction technique of skyscrapers has evolved over time. In the past, especially before the 20th century, the most well known and used structure was the pyramid structure. It consisted of an enlargement of the section of the progressive pyramid: indeed, it widened as it approached the ground. Pyramid constructions gained stability thanks to the homogeneity of the weight/surface relationship. In fact, the heavier the construction, the larger the surface was to support the weight of the building. This type of construction was used by the Egyptians to build the Giza pyramids for example and evolved to more recently build the Eiffel Tower (300 m) in 1,887 or the Transamerica Tower in San Francisco (260 m) in 1,969.
In the course of time, the construction techniques improved allowing to go from 10-15 floors late nineteenth century to 30-40 floors in 1930. Then the reinforced concrete began to be used in the mid-nineteenth century.
Today, to reach great heights, it is better to use strong and light materials.
From the interwar period until the end of the sixties, there was the same internal general plan for all high-rise buildings called the central core structure. Today the central core structures are extremely widespread.
The central core structure is based on the existence of a massive core of reinforced concrete in the heart (or center) of the skyscraper; that is to say, a huge hollow pillar in reinforced concrete that stiffens the structure of the building. Dozens of steel beams are connected to this core to solidify the structure of the building. Inside this framework, there are obviously several lifts, fire escapes, water inlets to serve the building.
The central core must be able to support the entire load of the building. Indeed, four beams from each corner of the core are arranged on each floor and serve to support the main floor.
These beams are usually partly metallic and are surrounded by a thick layer of concrete. They are gradually refined from the core to the facade: that is to say that they are thick in contact with the nucleus and finer at the end of the nucleus. They generally have a thickness of about one and a half meters in contact with the core and measure less than half a meter at their end. The beams are concealed by the false ceilings which are thicker than the beams to conceal them. In order to obtain a maximum rigid and solid set, these beams are themselves connected to other beams that line the facade vertically and act as walls to fight against the force of the wind.
