To understand the foundations of modern architecture, we must go back to the origins of this art unlike any other. While architecture refers to a set of scientific techniques for building construction, it also includes notions of essential aesthetics.
If we go back to the very origin of the word, it refers more concretely to the action of covering a place and thus giving it its physical appearance. From prehistoric times to the present day, architecture has evolved to encompass different issues over time and time. Very quickly, buildings are no longer thought of as mere receptacles or shelters, they also symbolize power, the sacred and many other statuses. Architecture then diversifies. In the 16th century, architects specializing in the fortification of buildings are also called "engineers". Their role is to build buildings strong enough to withstand the onslaught of enemies during the war.
Today, what is called architecture refers more to aesthetics as evidenced by the birth of new currents such as modern architecture; but in reality, it is as close to the Beaux-Arts as to the building trades. It is a mix of formal construction and aesthetic sensitivity.
Also called modernism, modern architecture brings together several conceptualizations of architecture. Born at the beginning of the 20th century, it is based on three main pillars: functionalism, rationalism and the originality of form.
Modernism follows the Bauhaus movement and the important dates of its beginnings include the creation of the Bauhaus School in 1919, the publication of the first issue of The New Spirit in 1920 or the creation of the Union of Modern Artists in 1929. From the years 60-70, the Modern Movement is considered finished, new movements are created, such as Brutalism, the Metabolic Movement, etc.
Modern Movement is characterized by simple geometric lines, by the very functional side of the building. Man is indeed at the heart of all attentions and everything is done to simplify his task. The windows and curtain walls then appear to bring more light.
