It is the substitution of cast iron by steel that will allow to climb much higher and build the first skyscrapers. Second generation buildings no longer need to be supported by stone. Lighter and taller buildings are emerging. In 1885, the first skyscraper was completed. The "Home Insurance Building", designed by William LeBaron Jenney (a pupil of Viollet-Le-Duc in Paris), it was a steel structure and a "curtain" wall that only served to maintain the frame in place.
