Many arguments plead against skyscrapers, especially when speaking of Paris. The proliferation of skyscrapers in the world first returns an unmarked image where all cities tend to resemble each other. But Paris does not need skyscrapers to exist, unlike other cities that have made it an identity reference, like Dubai. Seen from the Eiffel Tower, the Parisian landscape presents itself as an extremely homogeneous expanse, from which emerge only the great monuments and some seventy floors of La Défense. Because Greater Paris is the European metropolis with the most skyscrapers. This architectural typology, born at the end of the 19th century in the United States thanks to the progress of the elevator and metal construction, theorized by the moderns in the 1920s as a new paradigm of the city, finally combined a symbolic image of modernity, real estate development logic and apparent form of density.
Because there is a naive belief, quite widely shared, that skyscrapers allow density against urban sprawl.
