During the twenty years preceding the publication of the History of Architecture, Choisy will thus multiply his research on the architecture of the civilizations of the past, which, as he himself notes, constitute as many preliminary documents to the design of a history of construction among the ancients.
In 1883, after traveling through Asia Minor and writing several articles, Choisy published his second major book, The art of building among the Byzantines. An accomplished Latinist and hellenist, Choisy continues to work as a philologist and performs a critique of the restitution of several ancient texts. In 1883 and 1884, he published his Epigraphic Studies on Greek Architecture, bringing together the translation of four descriptions of works on monuments of ancient Greece. In 1904 is published the Art of Building among the Egyptians, the last work of a trilogy devoted to the study of ancient and Byzantine constructive methods. Meanwhile, Choisy went from a history of construction among the ancients to a general history of architecture by publishing in 1899 the History of Architecture. One year after his death, in 1910, appeared his commented and illustrated translation of Vitruvius.
Guided by a knowledge radically different from that of the architects of his century, trained in description, analysis, experimentation, calculations of works and materials, Choisy clearly puts into practice what he had already announced in his The art of building among the Romans, that is to say, "The history of these monuments, considered from the point of view of the art of the engineer" .
