The set of architectural works (buildings, urban spaces and landscape interventions) named "Architecture of the XX century of the City of Montevideo" is constituted by a significant number of realizations representative of an architecture that includes a wide variety of architectural expressions. It is a monumental ensemble of exceptional features, witness of an era, and a certain way of understanding the architecture, the urbanism and the transformation of the physical and social environment.
At the same time, it constitutes a unique cultural testimony of syncretic integration of various influences and intelligent transposition of ideas and architectonic forms generated in other latitudes, adapting them to a city, to a geographical and to a social and cultural context in a relevant and original way, constituting a key to its authenticity and its universal value.
Most of these realizations correspond to the decades of the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s of the last century. The term has been provisionally determined as "Modern Architecture of XX Century", the set of works belonging to the renovating modalities in architecture, produced between the years 1915 and 1965.
This range of achievements includes a broad repertoire that extends from the earliest architectural expressions that produced breaks with traditional "styles" and eclectic and historicist academic footprint architecture (and thus cataloged by national historiography as "renovators"), to the more advanced expressions of the 1960s, strongly influenced by post-war architecture, TEAM X experiences, regionalisms, "International Style" and modern Brazilian architecture.
Between the two extremes, are the renovating modalities of the decades of the 20s and 30s, inspired by the avant-garde artistic and architectonic from Europeans early in the century, strongly associated with German and Dutch expressionism, but also rationalism and purism. In those same decades, Art Déco flourished, with French influences (originated in the 1925 Decorative and Industrial Arts Exhibition in Paris).
