In 1932, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Philip C. Johnson, head of the museum's architectural collections, and Henry-Russell Hitchcock, architectural historian, organized a major exhibition, "The International Style: The architecture since 1922 ". Under this name of international style are grouped formal constants spotted by the organizers of the exhibition in some buildings built after the First World War in Germany, the Netherlands, the USSR, and France: emphasis on the volume effect at the expense of mass effects, asymmetrical composition and lack of applied decoration. For Hitchcock and Johnson, these aesthetic principles represent the culmination of the long quest for a modern style that dates back to the early nineteenth century. This modern style is both adapted to contemporary materials and new construction techniques, and rid of historical references or borrowing from the forms of the past.
This New York event must be understood as the defense and illustration of a certain form of contemporary architecture. As such, it presents a necessarily schematic vision of the history of architectural forms for more than a century. The international style is the highlighting of certain morphological characteristics of the 1920s, but also a set of normative recommendations to the architects so that they build in the vein of this style. Some architects cited by Hitchcock and Johnson as representative of the international style criticize this narrow definition and stand out from a too exclusively formal and stylistic approach to contemporary architecture. They claim that their architecture is only the direct and logical manifestation of science and contemporary society, that it will change as conditions evolve and eventually escape the limits imposed by stylistic fashions.
