The term postmodern architecture also called postmodernism describes the growing number of contemporary buildings that break with the criteria of the international style. Postmodern architects are more interested in historical or technical forms than in form, that is to say, a provision of space and theoretically determined mass. Their works tend to be designed in terms of images and symbols and rely on historical details or the exaggeration of structural elements intended to reveal the function of a building.

It is from the 1960s that criticisms and challenges to the precepts of the international style started emerging. In the emergence of what will be called postmodern architecture from the 1970s, the United States plays an important role. As early as 1961, Jane Jacobs, in "The Death and Life of the Great American Cities", denounces the destructuring of the traditional urban fabric, the result of an unadorned application of the functionalist urbanism stemming from the Charter of Athens. But, beside this severe diagnosis, she seeks to highlight the possible regenerative forces.

In 1966, Robert Venturi, an architect working in Philadelphia, published "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture", a true advocacy for an ambiguous architecture in its form and meanings. Venturi blames the architecture of the modern movement, especially that of Mies van der Rohe for its puritanism and monotony. Based on examples borrowed from the Mannerist, Baroque and Rococo eras, he advocated the use of irony and the interweaving of different scale motifs to make buildings more attractive.

This influential manifesto brings architecture into a "Mannerist" phase that also takes its source from vernacular and commercial architecture. In 1972, Venturi released "Learning from Las Vegas", by analyzing the urban sprawl of Las Vegas, and by identifying formal and spatial structures in this seemingly chaotic urban landscape, the author rehabilitates the mundane and scorned commercial environment. Venturi's approach, which uses notions borrowed from semiology, tends to consider architecture as one of the means of communication in society.
