Architecture is the art of building. It is a learned and complex art of which one of the major functions is to give spatial and symbolic landmarks, which vary from one civilization to another. Reflecting an era, a culture, a society, architecture models men and acts on their way of life: everyone, indeed, is constantly confronted.
It is sometimes considered that architecture integrates all the other arts, by the fact that it concerns both the pictorial field, the facades are plans to be organized according to the openings, the ornamentations, the proportions, the sculptural field ; the buildings are volumes and masses to balance, to contrast, to pace ; and the field of internal space built, that is to say the space delimited by walls and a roof. In fact, the architect is the prime contractor, if not a total art, at least a synthetic art par excellence.
The great diversity of definitions of architecture - given for centuries by the architects themselves - reflects the difficulty of defining this art: how to find a common denominator for all that is built?
the Roman architect Vitruvius is the first to define Architecture, by its finalities, the solidity, the utility, and the elegance. This definition, if it does not exhaust the subject, takes into account the complexity of architecture, which must embrace both technical aspects (firmness, the safety of construction), functional (destination, response to a program) and aesthetic (harmony, balance, beauty). According to the civilizations, the epochs, the stylistic currents or simply the fantasy of the architects, one or the other of these aspects will be privileged.
More recently, the definition given by the architect Le Corbusier in the early 1920s - "architecture is the scholarly game, correct and beautiful, volumes under the light" - remains equally fragmentary in the sense that it does not exclude the design, advanced by the same architect, of the building as "machine to live in". It is among these different approaches that the dilemmas of the art of building are undoubtedly situated, at least in modern Western civilization.
