In fact, the purpose of any building is the realization of a place that isolates its occupants (men and/or material goods, divinities). The type of building ( materials, structure, eventual decor) is conditioned by the technical resources of each civilization (related to the physical conditions of the place) and by the program (destination) assigned to it, which includes not only rational data, but also the symbolic values ​​conferred on it by the spiritual and cosmic vision of men, thus, the interaction of myth and matter leads to solutions that sometimes escape analytical reasoning. These mythical values ​​have scarcely subsisted in the West, since the classical period, than those of beauty or ostentation, but many others are detectable among pre-logical cultures.
The architect is the person who plans a building and supervises its construction. His duties include the creation of the project, the preparation of detailed specifications and detailed execution plans. He is responsible for verifying and settling the contractors' briefs, and for ensuring that the executors comply with the prescriptions he has given and the legislative regulations.
In the Middle Ages, the architect is a master builder. In the twelfth century he still worked with his hands among the workmen.
