Architecture, a complex art with multiple determinations, is dependent on many components of the social field, on which it acts in return.
Architecture has historically made it possible to express political power, from the imposing palaces of ancient Egypt, which mark the power of the Pharaoh, to the sumptuous Palace of Versailles, which assembles that of the Sun King. It may also refer to a certain type of government: the nineteenth-century neoclassical style of the Capitol in Washington refers to the democracy of antiquity, while its gigantism imposes the size and strength of the federated states; the neo-Gothic style of the London Parliament Building, begun in 1840, is a reminder of the permanence of the monarchy in the British parliamentary system; in the same way, in France, the troubadour style of the nineteenth century helps to legitimize both the Restoration and the Second Empire by inserting them into an artificial historical continuity.
Economic and social conditions also inevitably affect architecture. Thus, the Florence of the fifteenth century. reflects the rise of a new class, that of the bankers and merchants from the great patrician families: it is the period of the construction of great palaces (Medici palace, Strozzi palace, etc.). In the sixteenth century, in the Venetian hinterland, lands previously unsuitable for agriculture were highlighted; the Venetian and Vicentine aristocracy then built the famous Palladian villas (built by the architect Palladio, or attached to his style); their perfect order playing on symmetry and their graceful theatrics lend themselves to brilliant receptions. Likewise, the flourishing landed aristocracy scattered throughout England in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries will build many mansions with elegant architecture. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the planters of the South in the United States manifested their recent wealth by raising refined and affluent homes on their estates. Still, in the United States, the skyscraper, which multiplies the space from a small parcel of soil, plays as a symbol of the profitability of the investment; it is also emblematic, by the constant increase of its height, of the frantic competition between the companies.
