The name of the school derives from the union of the German words for construction (bau) and house (Haus). With this name and an architect as a founder, it is hard to believe that it did not include architectural studies when it was launched. However, construction has always been one of his domains, as shown by the Haus am Horn (1924), the only living legacy of the school in the city of Weimar.
This "model" house or "experimental house" was built with the intention of meeting all the needs of the citizen of the time and already brings together the architectural principles of the Bauhaus: rational, square or rectangular shapes, without artifice, designed to be built with few means and using innovative materials. Inside, it had the most advanced technological equipment for the time (central heating, laundry ...) and furniture from the school's workshops.
This white cube was supposed to be the beginning of a colony to house teachers and students, a project that never saw the light of day because of the school's move.
In 1925, the school was forced to move to Dessau and Gropius decided to take the opportunity to create a building that embodies the principles of the Bauhaus. It is a real Gesamtkunstwerk, a "total work of art" since the buildings and what they contained were designed as a set, it was decorated by the students of the mural painting studio, the metal workshop has created the lighting accessories and the letters of the facade come from the design of Herbert Bayer.
The complex consisted of different connected sections, each dedicated to one function: one wing for workshops, another for teaching, and another residential for students. And its shape is reminiscent of a mill or a propeller. For its realization, Gropius used new materials, such as reinforced concrete, and innovative construction methods, such as glass curtain walls.
