The development of a new manufacturing technique transforming steel in cast iron, around the 1880s, allows a lowering of the cost of its production and thus, accelerates its generalization. Its strength and durability properties make it indispensable in the construction industry. Used on many sites, steel and concrete are two essential materials, present in the largest modern buildings.

The years following the beginning of the Industrial Revolution are marked by unprecedented architectural development. The arrival of steel and reinforced concrete pushes back the limits of the construction of the time. In order to present the progress of this technical prowess, a new international event appeared in the middle of the 19th century, the world exhibition. These fairs main objective is to show the opening of the nation to the world through an exhibition of a monumental dimension. The host country wishes to reveal its technical advances of all kinds, presented as a technological showcase. The first of these international exhibitions opens in London May 1, 1851 under the name "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations"

The basic idea of this exhibition is to present to the world the advances of England in the field of arts and sciences. More than 6 million visitors will come to discover it in less than 6 months. Its success is largely due to the Crystal Palace, built for the occasion by Joseph Paxton. Erected in Hyde Park in the heart of London, the incredible structure impresses and amazes the West quickly. Built from innovative materials such as iron and glass, the monument clearly stands as a child of the Industrial Revolution.

the Palace is one of the first buildings exclusively using these two materials. With more than 70,000 square meters of glass only for the ceiling of the structure, the crystal palace shines through its transparency. The clarity effect that emerges from the structure changes the visitor's experience; both inside and outside the building you can live the composition as a whole. The historian Alfred Gotthold Meyer points out, about this architecture, that it means the arrival of a "new value of space" that takes shape. Made of prefabricated pieces, the palace was assembled directly on the site. This new construction method makes it possible to erect the building very quickly and thus considerably reduce costs.
