The developments known in Paris and London in the mid-1800s require several years before influencing other European capitals. Germany, on the other hand, is experiencing late urban development compared to its neighbors. The industrialization of the country did not begin until 1860. However, in just 20 years, a new wind blows on Germany, turning the country into an industrialized machine catching up with all the accumulated backlog.
Previously unknown prosperity is taking hold. Siegfried Giedion explains, a profound change is experienced by Germany: The 1970s were marked by a considerable effort to catch up with the industrial development of other countries. Around 1900, there were sudden trends to recover the delay in the aesthetic field. Greatly influenced by the urban developments experienced by the two great European powers, many German architects and engineers are embarking on a race for excellence. Peter Behrens (1868-1940) is part of this movement.
Known for his participation in the development of modern architecture in Germany, Behrens does not hesitate to push the known limits. His use of materials like glass and steel made him the pioneer in a completely different way of building up until then. In addition, his pedagogical and mentoring qualities precede him; several luminaries of architecture move into the Behrens workshop to receive training. Thanks to his teaching and his contribution of novelties to the German architectural world, he influences many generations of architects, including that of the architect whose corpus is analyzed in this memoir, Walter Gropius (1883-1969). Appointed for several years in the Behrens cabinet, Gropius evolves in a modern environment that inspires him in his own architectural research.
