In order to observe the importance of the development of space in modern architecture, we deploy our research around a building that Siegfried Giedion defined as the only one of that era to crystallize a new conception of the space that sets in: the Bauhaus complex in Dessau. School of design focused on the link between art and technology, the Bauhaus knew three distinct phases of development. Firstly, the school was founded in Weimar, where classes will be held at the former School of Applied Arts in Weimar, a 1910 construction of Henry Van de Velde.
Following persecutions by the new political group in power, the school is forced to move. Comes the second phase of development, in Dessau from 1925, the one that interests us more particularly for this memoir. Eventually, the institution experienced a third phase of development in Berlin for only a few months, before being forced to close permanently in 1933.
Built in 1925 and 1926, the Dessau complex is the second school known to Bauhaus teachers and students. Forced to leave the Weimar Republic because of the election of a right-wing party strongly at odds with the ideas promulgated by the Bauhaus, the institution finds refuge in this municipality located 150 kilometers south of Berlin. The mayor of Dessau-Roßlau, very open to the new precepts of modernity, wants to make his city a reference in the field. He, therefore, grants Gropius and his institution land and the funds needed to build a new school building. Designed and produced by Walter Gropius, the Dessau complex features several revolutionary architectural elements for the time
The architect wishes, through the architecture of the school, to show the ideas conveyed by the school. None of the parts of the complex, conceived as a coherent whole, is independent of the others. The school itself, as well as housing for the students who live next to it, are on the same ground. Nearby are also built the houses of the teachers. All these elements are part of the complex. This layout will be examined throughout the memoir to reflect the arrival of new spatial thinking in the architectural and urban development of the 19th century.
