Because they are ubiquitous in Gropius' architectural research, we will take as a starting point the space theories developed between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Examining the concepts of corporeality developed by Husserl, we will study the taking into account of the body of the spectator in connection with the development of the urban. The human is no longer just an eye, it is also a body that moves in space to fully live the plans and volume of a place. The urban observations of Baudelaire will also be analyzed. He is one of the first to put forward the notion of "loiterer". Linking the metropolis to modernity, the French poet conceives the stroll as a state of passionate but conscious observation, where the stroller strolls in a place, in the city, leaving the urban world to trace its course.
Our research is then interested in pictorial art. Space, not limited to urban planning and architecture, is expressed in art in general at the beginning of the 20th century. Three particular artistic trends draw our attention. Influenced by Cézanne's perception, with Picasso and Braque as leaders, Cubism explores a new way of representing the real world. Mainly characterized by the breaking of the unique point of view that brings a simultaneity of perceptions, this singularity gives the artistic movement a new appropriation of space.
Space becomes a full-fledged medium in Cubism. Italian Futurism is also a pictorial current on which we will look. Exalted by the modern world and particularly by the machine, this artistic movement seeks dynamism in its works. The simultaneity of the forms and the representation of the movement make it possible to integrate another dimension, that of the displacement in the space. Russian constructivism, for its part, attempts by other means to introduce space into its works. Developed in continuity and in reaction to Cubist and futuristic currents, the Russian movement uses classical geometric shapes to represent this additional value. A great advocate of these new conceptions of space, Siegfried Giedion proposes several links linking pictorial art and architecture.
