When the industrial revolution began in Western cities, in the middle of the 19th century, a new conception of the city emerged. The arrival of new building materials revolutionizes the way of conceiving the built place and, thus, the inhabited place. Through this redesign of the building, a questioning of the city and its form is developed. Many cities are transforming, in connection with these new precepts, the Haussmannization of Paris is certainly the greatest achievement of this urban revolution. At the heart of urban changes in the 19th century, Paris is a forerunner in shaping the modern European capital. This metropolis is important, not only because of its contribution to urban and architectural novelty. A hub for the development of modern ideas in Europe, many theorists see Paris as a center of knowledge and exchange. It will be for many decades the inspiration of many theoreticians and writers. It is therefore relevant to deepen our knowledge of this capital, decisive place for the establishment of the many urban and architectural foundations of the 20th century.

In the book The City of the Industrial Age;  Maurice Agulhon highlights an essential point in the grandiose transformation of Paris. Haussmannization does not correspond, according to him, to the extravagances of the ruling monarchy. This planned transformation is first and foremost a response of the French metropolis to the modern world, demonstrating that it was ready for a great metamorphosis; "Haussmannization"  the word is authentic is not an accident or the whim of a prince. It is primarily an answer, it is rooted in the multiple pressures that shake the city at the beginning of the century, demographic pressure and economic pressure that jostle the game of urban values, the price of land or buildings.

This project, led by the prefect Haussmann between 1853 and 1870, is the most discussed episode of urban change in the history of modern urbanism because it completely questions the shape of the city. As we will see a little later, the innovative concepts applied in Paris are then repeated in many metropolises across the continent, as the model to be respected and applied, for the benefit of all. Many French cities will follow the path taken by Paris; for example, Marseille and Lyon, with their long-term development plan and neighborhoods developed according to the occupation (industries, residences), are considerably closer to the Parisian model.
